Ithumba, a special place in Tsavo, has witnessed some incredible field stories that warm the heart. Among these tales are not one but two occasions where orphaned calves were delivered to the stockades by wild elephants, showing their remarkable sense of compassion. The latest incident involved a wild bull who sought help for an arrow wound, displaying a level of trust and intuition that left everyone in awe.
The dry season was taking its toll on Tsavo, and many bull elephants were converging at the Ithumba stockades for water. Among them, our keen-eyed Keepers spotted a bull with an arrow wound in his front right leg joint. Despite the late hour, they were determined to help, but the bull disappeared into the wilderness before they could intervene.
Zurura and Kasigau, seemingly good friends with the bull, stood sentry throughout the treatment. Zurura attentively oversaw the proceedings, showing curiosity and calmness. After the successful treatment, the bull and his elephant companions walked back into the Tsavo wilderness, his life saved thanks to the timely intervention.
The bull’s trust in seeking help at Ithumba speaks volumes about the impact of the conservation efforts in the area. Once a fraught territory, Ithumba has become a favorite destination for elephants, providing a safe haven in northern Tsavo. The Wildlife Trust and the Kenya Wildlife Service have collaborated for nearly two decades, establishing the Ithumba Reintegration Unit and transforming the area into a sanctuary for elephants.
The story of the wild bull showcases the remarkable intuition and trust elephants have in those who earn their respect. Despite being entirely wild and not raised through the Orphans’ Project, the bull sought help when he needed it most. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the team could provide life-saving treatment on the very doorstep of Ithumba.
One week after the treatment, the bull made a triumphant return to the stockades, standing tall and proud, fully recovered from his ordeal. Witnessing his restoration to natural splendor was a heartwarming sight, affirming the positive impact of conservation efforts in preserving these majestic creatures.
